Studies have found that return rates for ecommerce are increasing, with the average return rate for online purchases being around 16%. This is significantly higher than the average return rate for brick-and-mortar stores, which hovers around 8%.

The cost of processing returns can be quite high for ecommerce businesses. In the United States alone, the total cost of processing returns was $369 billion in 2018. This figure is expected to increase as ecommerce continues to grow.

According to a study by Retail Wire, the average cost of processing a return is 8 per item. These costs can quickly add up, particularly for businesses with high return rates.

One of the most common reasons for returns in the ecommerce industry is incorrect sizing or fit. A study by ReadyReturns found that most returns (22%) are due to products not fitting as expected, making it essential for online retailers to provide accurate sizing information and guides.

Another common reason for returns is dissatisfaction with the product itself. Whether it’s due to poor quality, not meeting expectations, or simply not liking the product, and 19% of returns can be attributed to product dissatisfaction.

A study by ReadyReturns found that 49% of online shoppers check the return policy of an ecommerce store before making a purchase. Moreover, 72% of shoppers are more likely to shop with a retailer that offers a hassle-free returns process.

90% of customers cited free returns as a major factor in their overall satisfaction with an online retailer. Offering free returns can encourage customers to make a purchase, knowing they can return the item without incurring additional costs.

To combat the issue of sizing and fit, some retailers are experimenting with virtual try-on technology and personalization. Companies like True Fit and Fits.me offer solutions that help customers find the right size and fit before making a purchase, reducing the likelihood of returns.

As the ecommerce industry continues to expand, so does the volume of returns. According to Statista, global ecommerce sales are projected to reach 4.28 trillion in 2020. This growth is expected to result in a corresponding increase in the number of returns.

The fashion industry is particularly affected by high return rates, with Statista reporting that clothing, shoes, and accessories account for 56% of all online returns in the US. This is due to factors such as sizing issues, color discrepancies, and the tactile nature of these products, which make it difficult for customers to assess them accurately online.

Mobile ecommerce, or mcommerce, has been growing rapidly and is expected to continue its upward trajectory in the coming years. According to Statista, global mobile ecommerce sales are projected to reach $3.56 trillion in 2023, accounting for 72.9% of total ecommerce sales. This represents a significant increase from 58.9% in 2018, highlighting the growing importance of mobile shopping for businesses.

As mobile ecommerce continues to grow, more consumers are using their smartphones to shop online. Research by eMarketer estimates that in 2023, 90.8% of internet users worldwide will have made at least one purchase via a mobile device. This indicates that businesses must prioritize optimizing their online stores for mobile devices to capture this large and growing audience.

Mobile devices have also been surpassing desktops in terms of online shopping activity. A study by Adobe Digital Insights found that in 2018, mobile devices accounted for 58% of site visits and 39% of revenue for online retailers during the holiday season. This trend is expected to continue in 2023 and beyond, with mobile devices playing an increasingly dominant role in ecommerce.

Consumers are increasingly turning to their mobile devices to research products before making a purchase. According to a recent study, 82% of smartphone users consult their phones while in a store, and 45% read reviews to make informed purchasing decisions. Businesses must ensure that their online presence is optimized for mobile devices to provide these potential customers with the information they seek.

As mobile shopping increases in popularity, so too does the use of mobile wallets for making purchases. According to Juniper Research, the number of mobile wallet users worldwide is expected to reach 5 billion by the end of 2026. This represents a significant opportunity for businesses to adopt mobile wallet payment options to cater to this growing audience.

In-app purchases are becoming an increasingly popular method of payment for mobile shoppers. Global consumer spending on in-app purchases will reach $156.5 billion, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.6% from 2018 to 2023.
Alternative payment options, such as cryptocurrency and biometric payments, are also gaining traction among mobile shoppers. A study by Worldpay found that by 2023, digital wallets will account for 40% of online payments, with alternative payment methods making up an additional 17%. Businesses should stay informed about these emerging payment options to cater to consumers’ evolving preferences.

Despite the growing popularity of mobile shopping, cart abandonment rates remain a significant challenge for businesses. Research by Hot Jar indicates that the average cart abandonment rate on mobile devices is 85.65%, compared to 73.07% on desktops. Businesses must optimize their mobile websites for speed to ensure a seamless shopping experience for their customers.

According to recent studies, the average cart abandonment rate stands at 69.82%. This means that more than half of all online shopping carts are abandoned at any given time. However, it’s important to note that this figure is an average, and the actual rate may vary significantly among different industries and businesses.

A complicated checkout process is a major deterrent for online shoppers. In fact, 18% of potential customers would rather not purchase than go through a complex checkout process. Streamlining the checkout flow and reducing the number of steps can help mitigate this issue.

Shipping costs have a significant impact on cart abandonment, with up to 70% of shoppers abandoning their carts when they see high shipping fees. Offering free shipping or providing transparent shipping costs upfront can help alleviate this issue.

Technical issues such as website crashes or errors can lead to a 12% abandonment rate. Ensuring a smooth and error-free browsing experience is crucial in retaining potential customers.

17% of online shoppers abandon their carts due to concerns about the security of their payment information. Building trust by implementing secure payment gateways and displaying security badges can help mitigate this concern.

Forcing shoppers to create an account before checking out is another significant reason for cart abandonment, with 24% of shoppers leaving their carts for this reason. Allowing guest checkouts can help reduce cart abandonment in this regard.

Cart abandonment rates can vary significantly across different industries. For example, the automotive industry has the highest cart abandonment rate at 89.11%, followed by the airline and fashion industries at 88.87% and 88.57%, respectively. On the other hand, the grocery industry has the lowest rate at 61.13%, followed by consumer electronics at a rate of 70.65%.

Cart abandonment rates also vary depending on the device used for shopping. In Q2 of 2021, the cart abandonment rate was 80.6% on mobile phones and 66.1% on desktops. This highlights the importance of optimizing the shopping experience for mobile devices to reduce cart abandonment.

Retargeting ads can be an effective strategy to bring back non-converting shoppers to your website. These ads include display ads and Facebook ads, which allow advertisers to show specific ads to specific groups of people. Retargeted ads result in 30% of non-converting shoppers returning to the website where they abandoned their carts.

Email marketing can be a highly effective tool for recovering abandoned carts. Sending a strategic series of reminder emails, followed by incentives such as coupons or free shipping codes, can help bring customers back to complete their purchase. The average open rate for abandoned cart emails is 44%, with a click-through rate of 21%. Furthermore, the average conversion rate for these emails is 10.7%, making it a valuable tool for recovering lost sales.

Offering free shipping and returns can significantly influence purchase decisions, especially for customers under 25. Over 50% of this demographic cites same-day shipping as the number one factor driving them to make an online purchase. In addition, 54% say they are more likely to shop online when free returns or exchanges are guaranteed.

Enhancing user experience can play a crucial role in reducing cart abandonment rates. For instance, 63% of online shoppers who use mobile apps prefer them because they are more convenient than mobile sites. Retail apps are perceived as faster, offer better benefits and rewards, and improve the user experience by storing settings. Focusing on improving the overall user experience can significantly impact cart abandonment rates.

According to Pew Research, as of November 2021, only 16% of U.S. consumers had used cryptocurrencies. The study revealed that all respondents had used cryptocurrency for online purchases at least monthly from June 2021 through May 2022.

Despite the growing enthusiasm among some users, many U.S. consumers remain skeptical of cryptocurrencies. A Bloomberg “MLIV Pulse” survey conducted from July 5 to 8, 2022, revealed that retail investors are more skeptical of cryptocurrencies than institutional buyers.
Cryptocurrencies often have lower transaction fees compared to traditional payment methods, making them an attractive option for both consumers and merchants.
According to a recent Walker Sands report, 45% of US consumers receive one or two Amazon parcels weekly, on average. This figure is even higher for younger consumers, with around 55% of respondents aged 18-25 and 60% of those aged 26-35 receiving at least one parcel from Amazon weekly. As an Amazon seller, it’s crucial to be aware of faster shipping options that can help you stay ahead of the competition.

Nobody likes to see unexpected shipping fees in their shopping carts, and studies show that almost 85% of US consumers are more likely to shop online if free shipping is available. To capitalize on this trend, consider incorporating shipping costs into each product’s retail price or setting a minimum spending threshold – known as a free shipping threshold – to encourage customers to complete their purchase.

One of the main reasons consumers still shop in physical stores is the ability to have the product immediately. This preference is reflected in online shopping, with over 60% of shoppers aged 18-34 expecting same-day delivery.
While most online shoppers want speedy access to their products, recent research reveals that only 20% of US consumers are satisfied with the shipping options currently available. Among those who desire same-day shipping, 65% expect their packages to arrive within three hours of placing an order. The remaining percentage believes most ecommerce retailers, including Amazon, fall short in meeting their expectations.

Consumers don’t just want regular communication about their orders; they also demand overall transparency, including clear delivery terms and conditions. In a related report, 55% of respondents said they would not purchase from a retailer if they didn’t know when their package would be shipped.
What is BNPL?

What is Buy-Now-Pay-Later? As its name suggests, BNPL enables you to make a purchase of an item, receive it at once and pay for It later, typically over a period of installments. BNPL is a type of installment loan dividing your purchase into multiple equal payments. The first payment is due at checkout and the rest will be billed to your debit or credit card until the purchase is paid off.

These types of loans can incur interest and late fees but depending on the provider and the plan neither may be charged. Consumers need to be aware of how BNPL works and the specifics of the plan they are entering. If they fail to make a payment on time it could possibly put their credit in jeopardy.

How does BNPL Work?

BNPL is becoming popular both offline and online, but one of the most usual places it’s come across is at checkout online. During checkout you will see an option to split up your total purchase by paying a small amount now instead of the full price.

If you select this option, you will fill out a short application that includes information regarding your name, address, date of birth and phone number directly on the checkout screen. You will then provide a payment method and the BNPL provider may perform a ‘soft’ credit pull which does not affect your credit score. Your approval or denial of the application will happen in a matter of seconds.

Criteria for approval varies, but you may still be eligible even with bad or no credit.

Plans vary by provider, but many offer a “pay in four” model, which will split your purchase into four equal installments. Each payment will be due two weeks apart with the first due immediately.

As an example, if your total purchase price is $125.00, you will pay $31.25 at checkout and then have three remaining payments of $31.25 each two weeks apart. If you make each payment on time, you will pay off the purchase in six weeks.

“Pay in Four” typically does not charge interest, but some BNPL charge an annual percentage rate up to 30%. Late fees range between $7 to $8 and typically are capped at 25% of the value of the purchase.

BPNL Benefits for Retailers

What immediate benefits do retailers gain from adding BNPL to their toolkit? Let’s take a look.

Higher conversion rates: According to Statista, in March of 2021 over 80% of online shopping carts were abandoned. Some estimates suggest that online businesses lose about 75% of their sales due to online cart abandonment. Point-of-sale financing such as BPNL enables customers to make purchases even during lean financial times while also allowing them to take advantage of sales and promotional discounts being offered from your online store.

Larger sales pool: With BNPL, customers that would otherwise not be able to make a purchase can do so because of its affordability and divided payments. This enables you to reach a wider sales pool including the younger demographic.

Higher average value of orders: BPNL offers the opportunity for you to sell higher value items to customers because of equal divided payments increasing their purchasing power. According to Guidance, the average order value (AOV) has seen an increase of nearly 45% depending on the BNPL plan chosen.

Improved customer experience: Customers are happier when they are given more control and flexibility over their purchasing decisions. A BNPL system offers that flexibility which empowers your customers and improves the overall customer experience.

It’s simpler to explain the metaverse in contexts of what is in use today, what technology will be incorporated into it and what companies hope the Metaverse will evolve into in time.

To understand what the Metaverse will mean to the future of ecommerce this article will delve into the technologies it will use and it’s evolving development. Read on to learn more.

Decentralizing the Web

To Understand the Metaverse and how it will change ecommerce we first need to explore the development of web 3 and look back at the previous two iterations of the internet.

Web 1.0: Phase one of the internet can be characterized by how users interacted with it. Users were typically passive consumers of content. Unless you were a web developer or owned your own website, you could only read information and data placed on web 1.0 but not engage with it. Engagement changed with the arrival of web 2.0.

Web 2.0: Social media and video sharing platforms such as YouTube, MySpace, Twitter and the now defunct Facebook ushered in the era of web 2.0. The internet was now dynamic and no longer static. The internet was all about interactivity at this point with social and collaborative elements being introduced.

This more participatory internet came at a cost though. To create content and engage, online users were supplying data and personal information to the companies that control these platforms.

Web 3: Web 3’s development revolves around the concept of taking back data and personal information that is being supplied to companies and putting it back in control of the users. Creating a decentralized web using blockchain technology through networks like Ethereum (ETH) and Bitcoin (BTC) makes this possible.

The primary innovation of these networks is that no single entity has ownership, but it can still be trusted because each owner and operator must adhere to consensus protocols which are the same set of hard-coded rules. The secondary innovation is that these networks allow money and value to be transferred between accounts.

Web 3 will enable users of the Metaverse to not only take control of their data and personal information, but also enable them to have full ownership of their digital items, Cryptocurrencies and tokens will be used to create new economies and business models in an area being increasingly known as tokenization. We will go over cryptocurrencies, non-fungible tokens and blockchain technology soon.

Like the Metaverse, web 3 is still being built so its definitive version and what it will encompass is not yet known. What can be surmised is that the Metaverse will be created using web 3 to enable users to have full control of their data and ownership of digital items.

Virtual Reality – Augmented Reality (VR/AR)

The development of virtual reality – augmented reality (VR/AR) is the vehicle that is and will be propelling the Metaverse forward. AR/VR closes the gap between the physical and virtual world for Metaverse users and ecommerce. Simple use cases for AR/VR include customers being able to visualize items they are interested in purchasing through 3D renderings without the merchandise physically being in their possession – virtual shopping. (These virtual shopping statistics further drive home this mantra.)

Through the Metaverse, companies imagine common events such as a group of friends in their home with one describing a pair of shoes they saw and are interested in buying. An artificial intelligence (AI) assistant narrows down the selection as the customer describes the pair of shoes until they find the correct one. Once the pair of shoes is found the customer can try them on without physically wearing them and personalize them to their exact desires.

After the customer buys the shoes, they will have a physical pair delivered to them and their Metaverse avatar gets a pair as well that the customer owns verified through the blockchain. The customer has full control of their digital asset shoes and can choose to keep, resell or transfer as they please. This could be done with virtually any item within the Metaverse from shoes, cars, plots of land, homes and even exclusive experiences such as meeting a celebrity on a private island for dinner. Within the digital realm the possibilities are limitless.

Did you know?

Samsung opened a virtual replica of its flagship store in the Metaverse game Decentraland.

This will enable fashion, motor vehicle, luxury and other companies to create fully licensed digital replicas of their products that customers buy and own. These items are completely owned by the user and theirs to do what they want with.

But what is behind making this possible?

Blockchain Technology, Cryptocurrencies & NFTs in the Metaverse

Blockchain technology: In the simplest terms the blockchain is a record for online transactions. These transactions could be for money, movement of goods or exchanges in information. The blockchain is decentralized storing data on the network instead of a single database like banks, Netflix, Google etc. The blockchain is a distributed ledger – information regarding every transaction is held in many places at the same time. To make a change on the blockchain everyone is notified and must agree on that change.

This fact makes the blockchain incredibly hard to hack because each one of these records would need to be changed at the exact same time. Through the metaverse and ecommerce the blockchain would be able to securely facilitate purchases of digital items and give full ownership of those items to customers.

Cryptocurrencies: Cryptocurrency is a digital-only token that uses the previously mentioned blockchain to confirm transfers of value and information. Cryptography, (the reason for the shortened name of crypto) is the method used to regulate creation, trade and security of a cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrencies are essentially:

Digital – Cryptocurrency is completely native to the internet. You cannot physically hold or touch them.

Peer-to-peer – Cryptocurrencies are exchanged between parties without one central entity or middleman needed to approve the transaction.

Decentralized – Transactions are stored on a public, global ledger. Every transaction is held in many separate places or nodes at the same time. Removes custody from government and banking institutions.

Bitcoin (BTC) was the first cryptocurrency that was created by a person(s) under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. In white paper released in 2008, Satoshi referred to it as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system. The network that Bitcoin runs on, the BTC blockchain, launched in January 2009.

Non-fungible tokens: Non-fungible tokens are cryptographically unique tokens that are linked to digital, (and sometimes physical) content, providing proof of ownership. Use cases include artwork, music, digital collectibles and (merchandise, land and homes within the Metaverse) video game items.

Why is this important?

Cryptocurrency, the blockchain and NFTs create a secure way to prove ownership of digitally unique data and its value to be transferred peer-to-peer whether it be cryptocurrency itself, information or the digital replica shoes mentioned earlier – creating a virtual economy emulating real life.

The creation of the Metaverse is already well set in motion. A company like Meta doesn’t change their name from Facebook for no reason. In an interview conducted by The Verge in July 2021, Zuckerberg described the Metaverse as an embodied internet. Through the advancements of AR/VR users would feel completely immersed and present within the Metaverse. Zuckerberg also said that the creation of the Metaverse will not be a project for Meta to undertake alone – many different companies and creators will contribute to its creation. Users will be able to freely move their avatar and data from one part of the Metaverse to another no matter who controls that section of it.

To prove Zuckerberg’s statement as fact, that Meta will not be the only company building and contributing to the creation of the Metaverse – Microsoft has dreams of being a major player in the creation of the Metaverse as well and just made a major acquisition in Activision and Blizzard. This massive addition to Microsoft could potentially boost their Metaverse ambitions.

The creation of the Metaverse is still in its infancy. Multiple existing components are coming together to move it from an idea to a reality, but it’s safe to say that we are still five to 10 years out from seeing substantial progress in its creation.

According to an article published by Bloomberg Intelligence in December 2021, the Metaverse may be an $800 billion, next tech platform.
