The USPS Reseller Program is Cancelled — Here’s How You Can Still Get Great Rates

On November 10, 2021 the USPS filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) of shipping changes that would take effect on January 9, 2022.

If you’re selling online and you’ve been taking advantage of the USPS reseller program which offered PC Postage rates — deeply discounted rates to online sellers via a middleman program the USPS created in the early 90s — there’s bad news and good news.

The bad news is that the USPS reseller program is no more. The nation’s postal service has killed off this program and has eradicated many of the middleman “resellers” it had initially tasked with recruiting small and medium, growing businesses into the fold.

The goal was initially lofty: increase usage of the postal service’s most valuable products by introducing a way for partners of the USPS to resell its services. But the USPS reseller program hasn’t quite worked out the way the service saw fit.

According to a response on the decline of the USPS reseller program, a representative for the USPS, spokesperson David Partenheimer, commented in an interview with ecommercebytes that:

“The Postal Service undertook an evaluation of its reseller program and has determined that the program as currently structured is not resulting in the customer benefits and efficiencies that were originally envisioned, has caused difficulties in monitoring compliance with pricing and other terms, and should be discontinued.”

How Did the USPS Reseller Program Work?

Way back in 1992, the USPS created the reseller program to help SMBs gain access to the same sharply discounted shipping rates that big businesses were enjoying under the popular Commercial Plus Pricing (CPP) model. These smaller businesses didn’t have a large enough outbound shipping volume to qualify on their own for CPP, but the reseller program gave them access to these deeply discounted rates when they signed up under a specially appointed middleman.

What’s the Next Step?

If you were getting rates that were associated with the now defunct reseller program, you’re not out of luck by any means. Sure, the program has been discontinued. But there’s good news and a light at the end of the tunnel for all businesses looking for answers to how to get the best shipping rates possible from the USPS.
